This ride has been removed and is no longer located at Lagoon. |
The Top Eliminator was a very fun and fast paced ride. Two to four dragsters were pitted against each other in a race to see who has the fasted reaction and the fastest car. When the light hits green punch the gas, fly down the track, and have a blast! The ride was removed after the 2011 season to make way for Cannibal.
This ride used real dragster cars. There have been a few modifications to the cars to make sure they stay and run on the track. Plus the ride concept makes it easy to take the cars back to the starting position. But that doesn't take away the racing thrill. Each driver had control over the brake and gas from the starting line to the finish line. The ride's computer automated bringing the cars back to the starting line.
The trick to winning a Top Eliminator race was quick reaction when the light hit the green and shifting at the right moment. Races were won and lost solely by the location on the track where a driver chose to shift the car.
Each lane was individually timed, and the race was based on who hit the finish line first. It was possible for racers to cross the finish line last but still have a faster time. Depending on the ride operator sitting in the tower, some races included the reading of the times while the cars were in the process of reversing to the starting line. Times weren't read every time and was more of a bonus when the operator wanted to add to the fun of the ride.
Top Eliminator's downfall and possible reason for removal was its maintenance problems. The ride had a lot of technology in place that required everything to work together to work. Each car communicated with the tower control computer via radio frequency. If there was enough interference in the racing area, it was possible that one or more of the cars would not start or even shift from neutral to drive when the tower operator tried to start a race. It was common to only see two or three cars on the track because other cars were pulled off for repair.
